The Origin of
the Club
In March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic raged, schools across Canada fell silent. Children were confined to their homes, while parents struggled to balance working from home and caring for their children. During this time of social isolation, many children felt lonely and anxious due to the lack of interaction with their peers. Faced with this challenge, we came up with an idea: What if we could reconnect children through an online platform, creating a space for learning and interaction? This might help them find joy and hope during this difficult time. We acted quickly, gathering volunteer teachers and organizing a series of fun and educational online clubs, aiming to keep children engaged in the pursuit of knowledge through a variety of activities.
Over the course of the pandemic, we designed and hosted more than ten public service activities, such as fun math competitions, the magic of Rubik’s Cubes, biological science, children’s creative painting, French language introduction, multicultural education, microfilm production, Chinese storytelling, English reading, and traditional calligraphy. These clubs not only brought happiness to the children but also expanded their horizons and enhanced their critical thinking during these isolated times.
Growth and Impact of the Club
In four years, the club has grown significantly, with 24 dedicated teachers involved. High school and university student volunteers are the main organizers of these activities. Through their involvement, they have developed leadership and planning skills, gained a deeper understanding of positive education and youth psychology, and significantly improved their communication abilities. To make the activities even more engaging, teachers have continued to learn and advance their knowledge and teaching skills.
More than 1,000 children have participated in our activities, and their achievements have been remarkable: children's artwork was selected for the Canadian Ministry of Environment’s soil conservation project; records were repeatedly broken in Rubik’s Cube challenges; participants in the math competitions learned how to analyze and solve problems. Through the multicultural club, children learned to respect and appreciate different cultures, discovering opportunities for integration through comparison and exchange. The microfilm production club allowed children to create their own wonderful works that reflected their growth and lives.
The club has become more than just a temporary response to the pandemic. It has evolved into a haven for children's minds, a temple of knowledge, and a bridge for connection and growth. It has become the shining highlight of our non-profit organization and a profound cultural symbol in our community.
